Dark and deep, ever deeper, ever darker. the dwarves, in their greed, awoke shadow and flame.8/25/2023 You're not going to think it's a woolly mammoth, even if the description you hear matches the description you know of such a beast. If you hear that a big furry creature is knocking over cars and small buildings in Russia, you might assume it's a big bear, or a particularly large reindeer. Why was Gandalf surprised to find a balrog? He probably just hadn't had time to look into it for himself, and he might not have even known that there were any balrogs left. It seems likely that they were too busy being slaughtered to explore the taxonomy of the creature slaughtering them. Whether he was aware that it was a balrog, or even knew what a balrog was, is not adequately explored (it's possible that most dwarves chose to skip Ancient History in favor of Shiny Things and Applied Metallurgy). But you would definitely know that it was time to move house, possibly to a different country or hemisphere.ĭo note that Gimli recognizes the balrog as Durin's Bane, implying that someone managed to record at least a rough description of the creature. I mean, if you ran across a heiracosphinx or chupacabra or taniwha in your basement, you might not know what it was. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there!
